Chainsaw Carvings

Alaskan artist, Jamie Rothenbuhler resides in Houston, Alaska.
He began his career as a chainsaw carver in Anchorage, Alaska in early December of 2000.

 

Jamie, knowing that his mom and dad enjoyed hand-made wood products, carved his mom a three foot Santa for her Christmas gift.  It was three weeks before Christmas, and knowing that he could easily make another one, decided to see if he could sell the one he had just finished.  He posted a "for sale" sign on it and went inside his house to make a pot of coffee.  Before the brew was finished a woman stopped her car, knocked on his door and bought his first Santa.  His parents also owned and operated one of the nicest gift shops in Alaska (The Knotty Shop) and started selling his bears through their store. Jamie quit his other business and went full time into carving.  Since then he has added a variety of bears as well as fish, totems, mantles and custom carvings as well. 
Every three to four years you will find the need to "recoat" your carvings.  Jamie uses "Moose Hide Finish" or a clear watersealer to his outdoor carvings.  You can easily ind these products at your favorite paint store, and if not, use Varathane.
