'Around in the old days, John Hajdukovich, had quite a few wild horses that would come around the Mess Hall on the Old Post for food. Some of the solidiers, cooks, tried to tame them, but couldn't catch them.

In 1947 on July 4th, Col Schneider, the Post Commander, tried to set up a real Wild West Rodeo by means of using these wild horses. He had a corral built by the weather station, (that was where the old ball-diamond now stands). He then invited all the Brass in Alaska. To accommodate all these people, he had tents and Quonsets set up at Boleau Lake, and renamed it 'Lake Macintosh' for the occasion, (thank goodness that name never stuck). Back at the corral he had set up games to be played, including a greased pig contest. In the morning of the 4th the weather was nice and the Col and his wife came down to the corral. They were dressed in complete western attire, including riding whip and spurs.

The day before the rodeo and half of the night, a bunch of soldiers took off into the woods to gather up these wild horses; in the process 3 or 4 weasels lost their tracks and 2 6x6 trucks and a wrecker managed to get themselves stuck out in the tundra. They never got close to the horses either. Then to top it all off, none of the Brass or military invited, showed up; so ended the first and only rodeo.'
